NEW NEWS:

POPSICLE SALES:  Every Friday after school until the end of the school year, popsicles will be sold for $1, benefitting the 2019 5th grade science camp.  If your child would like to have a sweet treat after the end of a hard week, send them with $1 on Fridays to buy a popsicle.  Parents will be selling popsicles by the middle school and by the YMCA.

CINCO DE MADDOX:  Next week we will be celebrating Cinco De Maddox to raise awareness and funds for NF and honor Maddox Steinert.  NF, or Neurofibromatosis, affect 1 in 3,000 births and causes tumors (bumps) to grow on nerve endings throughout the body.  There is currently no cure for NF.  The money raised next week will go to CTF (Children’s Tumor Foundation).  This year, Cinco de Maddox is being extended through all of next week.  Student Council officers will educate their classmates on NF, put up posters throughout the school, and place collection jars in every classroom.  Friday, May 4, will be "Super Hero Day" where students can dress up in NF colors (blue and green) and/or super hero costumes.

BAND NIGHT AT ANGEL STADIUM – May 19:  Join our middle school band members as they perform the National Anthem before the Angel game on Saturday, May 19.  Ticket order forms can be picked up in the main office. Tickets are $20 each and will benefit the music program. All orders are due by Tuesday, April 24th and can be turned in to the front office or Mrs. Stevens. We will have group seats together – let’s make it a fun Arroyo Vista spirit night!

STUDENTS NOT RETURNING IN 2018-2019:  Arroyo Vista K-8 enjoys continued success! Working together, our staff, students and parents exemplify what it means to be a community of learners.  We look forward to a positive end of the year experience and excitedly anticipate the great things to come for the next school year.  To help us plan, if your child will NOT be attending Arroyo Vista next year, please click here to complete the form. CUSD Guidelines re: Possible School Walkouts

Posted 3/6/18

Dear CUSD Staff, Families, and Students,

The tragic event that transpired in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018, has left a deep and significant impact on our nation, including our very own students. Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones and peers whose lives will be forever changed. These events spurred many emotions, conversations, and debates associated with the incident, prompting many forms of public action.

We have listened to the voices of our students, our principals, and our parents. Many students have reached out to their principals and teachers with the desire to participate in upcoming events including the March 14, 10 a.m. nationwide walkout.  While CUSD supports the rights of our students to express their beliefs under the state and federal First Amendment rights, as a District we are not sponsoring or advocating any participation in demonstrations. Supporting the remarks by the California State PTA “care must be taken to ensure that orderly operation of the school is not disrupted and the physical safety of students is not threatened.”  We have all agreed that our focus will remain on instruction and learning and to keep students safe in classrooms.

If students walk out of their classrooms or the school, we will supervise and will work with our campuses to strongly encourage that these activities take place in the safest locations possible. Because this is a highly publicized known day to strangers, we continue to reinforce that the safest place to be is in the classroom.  We do not encourage students to congregate in open areas putting themselves at risk and we expect our students to follow the guidance of our principals and staff to ensure safety. In accordance with state law, we will not discipline students who choose to assemble, provided they adhere to District and school guidelines including, but not limited to:

  •  All activities must be peaceful and respectful
  • At no time may students leave the campus

Additionally, a student may be marked truant if they do not return to the classroom or if they leave the campus.

We continue to encourage parents to have a conversation with their students and to make their own expectations clear about participating in student demonstrations and these non-school- sponsored activities.  Principals and school staff who have been approached by students should continue to talk with them about this matter and maintain open lines of communication with parents.

To further support a safe campus environment, outside groups, parents/guardians, and other individuals who do not have official school business will not be allowed on campus to participate in the walkouts. As part of our normal operations, anyone visiting school campuses for school-related matters or for volunteer work must check in with the front office.

We are committed to the safety of all of our students and desire to assure staff, families, and students that our site staff will work tirelessly to create positive, supportive learning environment on all of our campuses in the event of any student demonstrations.

Our priority is student learning and safety. What we expect this month from our students will ensure that our students understand future expectations, as many other walkouts are being planned nationally.

Sincerely,

Ryan Burris
Chief Communications Officer

Dear Parents,

I appreciate all the feedback I have received today regarding the incident yesterday.  Everyone is safe at Arroyo Vista K-8 and we continue to keep student safety as a priority.  Mrs. Nollar and I have followed up with students and I wanted to remind you Mrs. Beckman, School Counselor, is available to meet with anyone who would like to talk to her.  We are going to create a text-a-tip number for students and parents to use so we can be more effective in promoting: If you see/hear something, say something.  The PTA is looking at date to hold a school safety night that will include our School Resource Officer and district student safety department members as well as our School Counselor.

Dear Parents,

We received a report from a parent after school today regarding an alleged threat made by a middle school student.  The School Resource Office was alerted.  Upon investigating, it was determined not to be credible.

Have a great night.

Our Mission is Learning.  Make Today Count!

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

Our campers have arrived safely to Science Camp.  The bus ride was uneventful, and everyone did great!  They are now getting settled into their cabins, meeting the counselors and hearing about the plans for the week.  They will be going on a short hike after lunch and then a night hike after dinner.  I will be going up to camp tomorrow to spend the morning and afternoon with our Wildcats.

I know how excited you are for all of our campers – rest assured they will be well taken care of.

Have a great rest of your day,

Orangewood Giving Tree

Just a reminder that all of the gifts benefitting Orangewood will need to be turn in by Monday, December 11. That’s THIS coming Monday. Please place the paper ornament tag on the gift so the center will know which child to present the gift to and return the gift to the large box in the front office. (We are NOT wrapping the gifts this year.)  Thank you to everyone that has contributed!

Our Mission is Learning.  Make Today Count!

Dear Wildcats,

Arroyo Vista K-8 has reported cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease recently among students. Please review the following information for a description of the illness, how it is spread, and what you should do if your child develops hand, foot, and mouth disease.  A hard copy of this letter is going home with elementary students.

What causes hand, foot, and mouth disease?

Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease is a common illness of infants and children caused by a virus. It occurs mainly in children under 10 years old, but may occur in older children and adults as well. It is most often seen in the summer or fall, though cases occur year-round. It is not related to foot-and-mouth disease in animals and is only transmitted person to person.

What are the symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease?

Symptoms of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease include tiny blisters in the mouth and on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and buttocks. The illness may also include fever, sore throat, or cold symptoms. Mouth blisters may make eating or drinking difficult. An infected person may have none, some, or all of the symptoms.

How serious is hand, foot, and mouth disease?

For almost all children the illness is mild. Symptoms are the worst in the first few days but are usually completely gone within a week. Early in the illness some children become dehydrated because of the fever and mouth pain. The Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease virus can cause more severe infection in the form of meningitis or heart infection, but this is very rare. Parents with infected children who are having severe symptoms, as well as persons with weakened immune systems who are exposed to hand, foot, and mouth disease, should contact their health care provider.

How does a person get hand, foot, and mouth disease?

The virus is found in the fluids from the nose, throat, skin blisters and stool of an infected child. Another child becomes infected when hands, food, or toys contaminated with the virus are put into the mouth.

How long does it take to come down with hand, foot, and mouth disease after a person is exposed?  It usually takes 3-6 days after exposure for symptoms to begin.

When is a person with hand, foot, and mouth disease contagious?

A person is most contagious during the first week of illness, but the virus may be shed in the stool for weeks.

How can I help prevent the spread of hand, foot, and mouth disease?

• Wash hands well and often with soap and water, especially after wiping a nose or changing a diaper.

• Cover coughs and sneezes and put used tissues into a trash can.

• Clean, rinse, and sanitize toys regularly at child care and after contact with saliva.

• Prevent sharing of food, drinks, and personal items that may touch the mouth, such as eating

utensils, toothbrushes, or towels.

What is the treatment for hand, foot, and mouth disease?

Relief of any fever or pain is the only treatment available for hand, foot, and mouth disease. To prevent dehydration, those with fever and mouth pain should drink plenty of fluids.

If my child develops hand, foot, and mouth disease, must s/he stay away from child care?

No, as long as s/he does not have fever or any other symptoms that would require exclusion.
